PART 1: LaMott & Levittown

Scholars: Lance Sussman & Lise Marlowe

Explore the rich history of the LaMott historic district, Camp William Penn, the role of local abolitionists like Lucretia Mott in the anti-slavery movement, and more.

How did bias impact the origins of Levittown, PA? Explore the “Caucasian-only” policy. Understand implications of the Levittown community in relation to the Civil Rights Movement.

PART 2: Columbia Avenue Riots/MLK & Girard College

Scholar: David Krueger – Dialogue Institute

Varied perspectives provide testimony not only about the Columbia Avenue riots, but of their significance as part of the modern civil rights moment.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a frequent visitor in Philadelphia, shared his message of the need to fight non-violently for racial equity and justice. His most memorable city appearance was in August 1965, when he spoke to a massive crowd of civil rights demonstrators at Girard College in North Philadelphia, during the fight for integration of the school.

PART 3: Lynching Site Ceremony and Dialogue - Coatesville, Chester Co.
Sunday, April 16, 2023
Scholar: David Krueger - Dialogue Institute

The lynching of Zachariah Walker occurred on August 13, 1911, in Coatesville, PA. This lynching is commemorated at The National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Meet at the site, participate in a remembrance ceremony and truth and reconciliation dialogue and learn about anti-lynching legislation.
